Walking in Ridgeway
Ridgeway is very lucky to have a large number of footpaths and bridleways. All are accessible from convenient points within the village and very few of the footpaths involve contact with public roads. Set within the Moss Valley Conservation Area, footpaths within Ridgeway provide easy access to beautiful and peaceful countryside and stunning views. It is hard to believe you are only 5 miles from Sheffield city centre!
Paths from within Ridgeway can take you to places you may not have realised you could get to without going on a public road. Examples are: Charnock, Birley, Owlthorpe, Mosborough, Eckington, Marsh Lane, Troway, Coal Aston and Norton.
By choosing from the huge range of paths, it is possible to design walks ranging from five minutes to several hours duration, all with minimal walking on public roads. There are footpath entrances near to all the pubs, bus-stops and parking places, so a circular tour ending in a pub meal or a drink is easy to plan.
We now have a footpath map of Ridgeway, showing paths and bridleways and roads, as well as local amenities. Click here to see the map. The map identifies the access points to the paths from public roads, as well as listing the 'Definitive' footpath numbers.
Click here to access the information page for walkers, which includes the map.
We will update the map in the coming months, and we hope eventually to list descriptions of all the paths. Approximate walking times, as well as levels of difficulty and possible muddiness will be added as time permits. To see a sample of the footpath desciptions, click here. The map is also available as a PDF file for download. To download the map click here.
We also hope to include OS map references of all the points of interest for prospective visitors, as well as brief details of Geocacheing activity within our locality.
On a historical note, we are told that most walkways and bridle roads around Ridgeway remain open largely due to the efforts of a prominent member of the community, Willis Fox, in the 1940s or 50s (Willis Fox was the author of the first book on Ridgeway written in 1950). He apparently used to make sure that all paths were walked every year so as to ensure that they remained open (as required by Act of Parliament). So we can be thankful to Willis for the excellent walking facilties that we enjoy in Ridgeway today.
