In his book, Willis Fox tells us that before Ridgeway had a piped supply in 1880, water was obtained from wells and springs. However, in the drought of 1868, the only source was Jacob’s Well in Kent Wood and villagers had to buy water from here at 4d per barrel. James Hutton soon recognised this problem and he provided and dedicated Wood Well which became the mainstay of the village for many years. At this time, Mr Hutton also encouraged Well Dressings, and sports were held in the Mill Field at “the top o’ the town.” As Jack Hambleton points out, Wood Well had the further benefits of providing water for christening Ridgeway’s babies, healing a variety of ills, and making an excellent cup of tea!
During the week commencing 4 July, the old traditions will be revived and the village schoolchildren will dress Wood Well. In addition, Village in Bloom will dress the Grit Circle. Make sure that you don’t miss these historic events!
Following this theme, Village in Bloom will also be running a special exhibition in the Church Hall on July 1, 2, 3, 8 and 9, which will display a wide range of interesting artefacts relating to Ridgeway’s history. This will provide an excellent opportunity for viewing material which has not seen the light of day for many years, and will be well worth a visit.
